Yes, close enough. I've played the Switch and Android versions, and STRONGLY prefer the tablet versions, vastly beats Switch for both controls and screen size.
While they did the best they could with clever selection wheels via the triggers, Switch controls are still very cumbersome and directly walking your guys around with the joystick is the only benefit.
Everything about the game and it's menu's were designed for mouse and keyboard, and a tablet touchscreen is just so so much easier to quickly navigate and issue commands just like a mouse, pinch to zoom in and out, use inventories, click and drag boxes around parts of your group, etc.
Lastly, and most importantly, you pretty much have to play the Switch version docked on a big tv screen, because the handheld screen is just way, way too small for that high isometric view and so much text to read. In handheld you have to make the fonts so big dialogue boxes take up half the screen and you end up zooming in on characters to see what the hell is going on.
I played maybe five hours on switch before giving up and buying the Android tablet version on sale for $5, and played easily 30+ hours traveling and on vacation on that one. iPad/Android versions 100% recommended over Switch, and they're usually cheaper with regular sales anyway.
Spoiler/Pro tip:
Start W/ a Cleric w/ 18 stats, use the books of the wisdom in the DLC for your own benefit (instead of for the story), start BG 2 w/ a 21 WIS Cleric and dual-class.
I don't understand…

I jumped into Baldurs Gate having never played a PC role playing game, and having absolutely no idea about D&D except the memes that people clowned it with in the 80s. By the time I was done with Throne of Bhaal I considered it easily the greatest series of games ever made.
Having said that, I recently convinced myself enough years had passed that porting a game like this to console prob would be intuitive enough to enjoy. Man was I wrong. This was on Xbox and admittedly I don't know much about switch controls but I would strongly advise against it. It was incredibly frustrating and I'm someone who easily spent over 1000 hours playing the series. If this platform is your only choice by all means otherwise I'd try tablet/iPad or of course PC if you have the option.

My understanding is that the port has a new control scheme for the switch that has been very well received by folks that have played the PC version.
That said has anyone played both the switch AND iPad versions specifically that can comment on which they prefer?

Awesome series. I'll also make a plug for the tablet versions.
I've played through BG several times since it was first released and the mobile version is really fantastic. Not quite as good as PC, but playing on the go, in your bed, etc… is incredible for how little you give up control wise.
Switch plays well especially on the OLED screen. I've also played Divinity Original Sin 2 all the way through on the Switch, so I'm used to the smaller screen environment. Being able to play wherever I want is amazing. I have the BGs on Android but still choose the Switch over my phone and tablet.
I remember a summer playing this with brother. We had two computers hooked over lan and only 1 copy of the game. We had to swap the disc's back and forth to load the game when it asked for the discs.

Good general tip. Better: Start with a Cleric with Con as Dump stat (18 Wis!), use Sanctuary spell to avoid the Sirens and acquire the Manual of Bodily Health adding +1 to Con after 10 minutes of play. Then import the character into BG1 and start over. Repeat until you have a 24 Con and regenerate HP like a troll. Then play through one more time, picking up the last point of Con on your way to BG2 and dual classing.

Having never played a D&D game before, regardless of platform, would you recommend starting with BG?

I finished the BG2 series before getting into BG1, and I would have to say it was hard to play the BG1 series through the end since I've already experienced the convenient UI, memorable NPC's, and the story line of BG2. Plus you can import your BG1 character into BG2 so I would recommend you start with BG1

This is the correct way to play.
Also, if you do PC and have one of the classic versions (probably not on Switch), you can kill Drizz't in BG1 and take his stuff (woohoo!), and then pause in the first fractional second of BG2 and dump all your gear on the ground. Otherwise, the game takes all your hard-earned equipment as soon as you start BG2 and you never get it back. There's better stuff eventually, but it makes the first part of the game more fun.
